Kolkata (West Bengal) [India], September 25 (ANI): West Bengal Congress President Subhankar Sarkar and party leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury on Wednesday took part in the party’s protest demanding speedy trial and punishments for culprits in the rape and murder of a woman doctor in RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, in Kolkata.
Earlier on September 23, the Supreme Court listed for September 30 the hearing on a suo motu petition on the rape and murder of a doctor in the state-run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata, West Bengal.
The matter was earlier listed on September 27, and a bench led by Chief Justice DY Chandrachud changed the date to September 30 at the request of West Bengal Government counsel.
In the last hearing on September 17, Kapil Sibal, senior counsel appearing on behalf of the State of West Bengal informed the court that an assurance to that effect was held out by the Chief Minister to the West Bengal Junior Doctors’ Front that no adverse or punitive action shall be taken against the doctors who return to work.
The incident has led to a war of words between the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the state government, with the BJP calling for the resignation of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.
The Anti-Corruption Branch of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) arrested Sandip Ghosh on September 2.
Ghosh was under investigation for alleged corruption and financial irregularities at the college and hospital, following a directive from a single bench of the Calcutta High Court, which ordered the CBI to probe the matter.
A woman trainee doctor was found dead in the seminar hall of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata on August 9. (ANI)
