Muzaffarnagar (Uttar Pradesh) [India], July 25 (ANI): A group of Kanwariyas allegedly beat up and injured a mentally unstable man at the Kanwar camp at Meenakshi Chowk in the Muzaffarnagar district, said an official on Thursday.
According to City Superintendent of Police (SP) Satyanarayan Prajapati, the mentally unstable individual had waved a stick towards a Kanwariya, following which a group of Kanwariyas beat him up.
“A mentally unstable person had reached the Kanwar camp at Meenakshi Chowk. He had a stick in his hand and waved the stick towards a Kanwariya. In response to this, the Kanwariyas beat him up and when he ran away from there, the other Kanwariyas chased him,” said the official.
Adding further, the SP said that the police present on the spot countered the Kanwariyas who were beating him and saved the person.
“The victim was given first aid and has been kept under observation. The situation is under control,” added the SP.
Further action is underway.
Earlier on Wednesday, in a tragic incident, one Kanwar Yatra pilgrim died and another was injured in a road accident in the Ratanpuri police station area of Uttar Pradesh’s Muzaffarnagar, police said.
The police said that three Kanwar devotees laid down on the side of the road after being tired when a speeding bike hit the sleeping devotee, leaving him dead.
Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Minister Atishi visited the Kanwar Yatra camps in Delhi to inspect the preparedness on Wednesday.
Speaking to ANI about preparedness, Atishi said that the biggest camps have been organised at Kashmiri Gate in Delhi and the camps can accommodate at least 2000 Kavarias.
She further said that since there is a high possibility of rain, waterproof tents have been arranged along with beds and tables.
Atishi also said that the preparations to welcome the Kavarias are in full swing. “The preparations are in full swing and we are ready to welcome the Kanwar,” she said.
With the monsoon showers providing their cool embrace to the subcontinent, devotees across the nation officially began their Kanwar Yatra, on the occasion of the first Monday of ‘Sawan’.
Many devotees throng temples dedicated to Lord Shiva to offer their prayers. Some also took a holy dip in the Ganga to mark the first Monday of ‘Sawan’.
Pilgrims who started their Kanwar Yatra were seen arriving in Haridwar two days ago to collect Gangajal and offer it to Lord Shiva today.
Devotees flock to temples, including the Mahakaleshwar temple in Ujjain, the Kashi Vishwanath temple in Varanasi, the Kali Paltan temple in Meerut, and the Jharkhandi Mahadev Temple in Gorakhpur, to offer their prayers.
The month of Sawan is revered by Hindus for its spiritual significance and devotion to Lord Shiva.
This sacred month, typically falling between July and August, marks a period of worship, fasting, and pilgrimage dedicated to the deity of destruction and transformation. (ANI)
