New Delhi [India], August 2 (ANI): The President of India, Droupadi Murmu, inaugurated a two-day Conference of Governors at the Rashtrapati Bhavan in the national capital on Friday.
Addressing the conference, President Murmu said that the agenda for this conference included issues that were crucial in achieving the national goals. She said that the deliberations of this conference would be an enriching experience for all participants and help them in their functioning.
She further stated that with the implementation of three new laws related to criminal justice, a new era of the justice system had begun in the country and said that the change in our thinking was evident from the names of the laws: Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, and Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam.
Murmu said that for the smooth functioning of democracy, various central agencies needed to work with better coordination across all the states.
She further said that the Central government had been giving utmost priority to the development of the poor, the border areas, the deprived sections and people left behind in the development journey.
She pointed out that a large section of the tribal population lives in the Scheduled and Tribal areas and urged the governors to suggest ways to achieve inclusive development for the people of those areas.
Murmu also emphasised encouraging natural farming to increase soil fertility and enhance farmers’ income.
The conference also saw the presence of Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Affairs Minister Amit Shah.
Referring to the oath of the governors, Vice President Dhankhar urged them to discharge their constitutional responsibility to make people aware of social welfare schemes and developments that have taken place during the last decade.
In his address, PM Modi urged the governors to play the role of an effective bridge between the centre and the state and interact with people and social organisations in a manner to co-opt those who are underprivileged.
He further stated that the post of the Governor was an important institution that could play a crucial role in the welfare of the people of the state within the framework of the Constitution, particularly with reference to tribal areas.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah indicated the course of discussions at the two-day conference and urged the governors to visit vibrant villages and aspirational districts to instill confidence among people and give a fillip to developmental work.
On July 28, Murmu appointed governors for several states across the country.
Gulab Chand Kataria, Governor of Assam, has been appointed Governor of Punjab and has also been appointed Administrator of the Union Territory of Chandigarh.
Along with this, Haribhau Kisanrao Bagde has been appointed Governor of Rajasthan, Jishnu Dev Varma has been appointed Governor of Telangana, Om Prakash Mathur of Sikkim, and Santosh Kumar Gangwar of Jharkhand.
The President has appointed Ramen Deka as Governor of Chhattisgarh and CH Vijayashankar as Governor of Meghalaya.
C.P. Radhakrishnan, Governor of Jharkhand with Additional Charge of Telangana, appointed as Governor of Maharashtra.
Lakshman Prasad Acharya, Governor of Sikkim, was appointed as Governor of Assam and has also been given additional charge of the Governor of Manipur. (ANI)
