Jaipur (Rajasthan) [India], June 5 (ANI): A doctor has been arrested for allegedly surgically removing the wrong kidney of a patient instead of the damaged one in Rajasthan’s Jhunjhunu last month, police said.
The victim, Eid Bano of Rajasthan’s Nua in Jhunjhunu district had filed a case against Dr Sanjay Dhankhar, police said.
Dr Dhankar who was trying to flee was arrested from Gujarat, they said.
“Eid Bano, a resident of Nua, had complained against Dr Sanjay Dhankhar for negligence in treatment and removing her right kidney. Following this, a team of five doctors investigated the complaint and it was proved that Dr Dhankhar was negligent in treatment. Dr Dhankhar removed the other (right) kidney instead of the damaged one. Following the surgery, the patient Eid Bano’s health deteriorated and she was referred to another hospital in a rush,” Jhunjhunu Superintendent of Police Rajarshi Raj Verma said.
Verma said that the case of medical negligence came to light when the doctors in Jaipur informed Eid Bano of the incident after examining her. Following this, the matter gained media attention and an investigation was launched.
The police registered an FIR into the case and when the hospital was searched, a lot of suspicious materials was seized from there. The police got hold of evidence suggesting tampering of documents and stamps of doctors.
“This proves that Dr Dhankhar not only showed negligence in treatment. He also committed fraud and prepared forged documents,” the SP said.
The police had earlier registered this case under Section 337 and 338 of the Indian Penal Code. But later, Section 420, 465 and 473 of the Indian Penal Code were added to it.
“Now Dr Dhankhar will be presented in the court. He will be brought on police remand,” Verma said.
The SP said that an inquiry will also be launched to find out the missing kidney.
“If the kidney has not been disposed of or preserved as per the biowaste and organ rules, then these sections will also be added. Apart from this, the section of intentionally endangering life can also be added,” he said.
According to the press release issued by the police, it was mentioned that Dr Dhankhar has a criminal record and has two previous cases registered against him. The previous cases were registered against Dr Dhankhar in 2015 and 2016 under Section 304A of the Indian Penal Code. (ANI)
