Leh (Ladakh) [India] August 3 (ANI): Seven people were injured after a two-story building caved in allegedly due to excavation work near it in the Kabbadi Nallah area of Kargil on Saturday morning, police said.
The incident occurred around 3:45 am due to the excavation of the land for construction, prompting an immediate and coordinated rescue effort.
Seven people trapped in the debris were successfully rescued and admitted to the district hospital in Kargil, they said, adding that the injured are safe and receiving medical care.
The rescue operation was quickly launched by the Indian Army along with the Union Territory Defence Response Force (UTDRF) and local volunteers.
The collapse incident near Kargil’s main market has caused disruption in the area and traffic from the National Highway has been redirected to the bypass road.
Senior officials, including Chairman Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council (LAHDC) Kargil Jaffer Akhoon, Deputy Commissioner Shrikant Bala Shib, and Senior Superintendent of Police Kargil, visited the site to oversee the rescue efforts.
Speaking to the media, DC Kargil acknowledged the incident as a substantial system failure.
He announced that a high-level committee would be formed to investigate the cause of the collapse, and those found responsible would face serious consequences. (ANI)
