Kaziranga (Assam) [India], August 7 (ANI): In a bid to empower the Forest Protection Force personnel, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma handed over 20 inflatable rubber boats to the Kaziranga National Park authority on Wednesday at a function held at Bagori Range in Kaziranga National Park.
It may be noted that during the Chief Minister’s review meeting on the safety of Kaziranga National Park in June, the personnel of the Forest Protection Force made a request for new patrol boats to have surveillance on any purported attempt of poaching and encroachment and take steps to check the menace.
In view of the request, the boats have been delivered in less than 60 days.
Later, Chief Minister Sarma visited the Hatimura embankment breach point at Kaliabor and took stock of the repair and restoration work.
He expressed satisfaction at the pace at which repair work at the breach point has been accomplished and said that the embankment breach at Hatimura has been closed in 26 days.
The team engaged in the repair work and worked day and night to overcome the operational challenges and complexities posed by the strong water current.
He further said that, as of today, all embankment breaches in Assam are closed.
Meanwhile, the Assam Chief Minister on Wednesday urged everyone to stay indoors following another round of heavy rain in the city.
In a post on X, CM Himanta said, “Guwahati is experiencing another round of heavy rain. We request everyone to stay indoors and avoid using vehicles unless absolutely necessary. Additionally, please avoid vehicular movement towards the downtown hospital areas on GS Road.”
A total of 880 casualties have been reported as a result of devastating floods in Assam from 2019 to July 25 this year, the Ministry of Home Affairs has said.
The flood in Assam has claimed the lives of 215 animals, including 13 one-horned rhinos, at Kaziranga National Park so far, officials said.
Sonali Ghosh, Field Director of Kaziranga National Park, said that 13 one-horned rhinos died after drowning in flood water in the national park. (ANI)
