North 24 Parganas (West Bengal) [India], September 9 (ANI): BJP leader Dilip Ghosh on Tuesday expressed concern over the unrest in Nepal following the protests led by youth that turned violent, resulting in clashes with the police that led to the death of 19 people.
The protesters demand measures to curb corruption and end the ban on social media applications.
Stressing the need for a “capable” government in Nepal, Dilip Ghosh said that India has “good” ties with the neighbouring country.
He told ANI, “There are problems in the smaller neighbouring countries around India. This is a matter of concern for India. Nepal needs a capable government. Nepal has good relations with India. I hope the unrest in Nepal will be resolved soon.”
Meanwhile, the Government of Nepal has lifted the ban on social media after 19 protestors were killed on Monday, who were on the streets against ban on social media sites and against alleged government corruption.
An emergency cabinet meeting held last evening decided to end the ban, which had started from September 4, with the government alleging that social media companies were non-compliant with the registration requirements in Nepal.
Following the government’s decision, the social media sites including Facebook, YouTube and X have been accessible past midnight on Tuesday.
Earlier, security agencies in India have stepped up vigilance along the Indo-Nepal border following large-scale violent protests in Nepal.
In Uttar Pradesh’s Lakhimpur Kheri district, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Sankalp Sharma said strict monitoring is in place.
“We are constantly keeping a close watch on the law and order developments in the neighbouring country. We are in constant coordination with the Border Security Force. Joint patrolling is being done. We have deployed adequate vigilance and police force,” he stated.
Similarly, in Darjeeling, West Bengal, the Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) has tightened security at the Panitanki Indo-Nepal border. Additional checks and patrolling are being carried out to prevent any untoward incidents as tensions continue to rise across Nepal. (ANI)
