Jaipur (Rajasthan) [India], March 11 (ANI): Jaipur’s St. Angela Sophia School found itself embroiled in a controversy after it issued a notice instructing students not to bring colors or play Holi at school.
Rajasthan Education Minister Madan Dilawar criticised the notice and called up the Central Board of Education to take action against the school.
“Holi is a festival of colours and reverence, celebrated by everyone in India. However, an order was issued in a school to prohibit students from giving their examinations if they were found celebrating the festival, which is very unfortunate… We request Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) to take necessary legal action,” Dilawar said.
However, school principal, Sister Cynthia clarified that the restriction was for only meant for synthetic and chemical colors, which could cause harm or allergies. The principal explained that the celebration would take place on March 12 after the students’ exams, with natural colours and flowers.
“There was no order to ban Holi, but we instructed the children not to bring synthetic colors or harmful chemicals to school. After the exams, we will celebrate Holi on the school premises. The information was shared with both students and parents.”
Speaking to ANI, she said, “Yesterday was the last paper of the students…So, we thought that after their exams are over, we would conduct a Holi celebration on 12th March. We thought that we should tell the students not to bring colours and tell them that we would celebrate Holi in a different way…Sometimes, students bring different types of colours which contain chemicals or small glass pieces which might hurt anyone… So this is the circular that we had sent to the parents saying that they should take precautions regarding the exams of the students.”
Further, she added, “There will be a Holi celebration on 12th March as we celebrate all the festivals here in the school. We just wanted the students to get done with their exams and then enjoy the festival and not to use such colours that can harm anyone else”
Sister Cynthia emphasized that the school’s primary concern was the safety of the students. “We want the students to enjoy Holi without any risks. Our celebration will use flowers instead of colors to ensure everyone’s safety and avoid allergies or injuries from synthetic colors,” she added. (ANI)
